This glossary defines terms used in this guide or related to this product.

administrator (privilege level)

One of three privilege levels, one of which is assigned to each Storage Management Appliance

user. A person assigned the Administrator privilege level can use all system features and can add,

delete, and modify users. See “Working with Users,” on page 23 for more information about

assigning privilege levels.

community string

A string of characters used to access an SNMP agent. The string is placed in the SNMP query

message sent to an agent. Different community strings allow different types of access. One string

can be used to have the agent forward accumulated data while a different string is usually required

to change the agent configuration or operating status. The community string is case sensitive and

the default string is public. See “Creating a New Discovery Procedure,” on page 51 for

information about entering a community string for each include range of a discovery.

content pane

Lower portion of a Storage Management Appliance page containing information in any of the

following formats:

■ Links page

■ Wizard page

■ Properties page

■ List table

See “Content Pane,” on page 12 for more information.

controller (storage element)

Control device used to configure a storage element and determine the element’s operating status.

Management applications such as the HSG Element Manager allow an administrator to access and

configure multiple controllers.
