DHCP network ad

dressing is enabled by default, which mea ns that an IP address and other network

settings are assigned automatically when you c onnect the HP D2 D Backup System to a network that has

a DHCP server. If preferred, you can use static IP addressing and assign settings manually during

the installation process.

In both instanc

es, the HP D2D Backup System should be on the same logical and phys ical network as the

host machine connecting to it. This is normally the case because, typically, the HP D2D Backup System is

connected to the same Gigabit network switch as the host machines backing up to it.

Optional Tape Attach

A tape drive may be attached directly to your H P D2D Backup System, allowing you to store backups

offsite. Please refer to “Attaching a physical tape drive” on page 29 for further details.

• By conne cting it directly to a network switch on your net work

• By connecting it to a backup server that is already on the network

The HP D2

This may

be your main network, which is also used to connect a number of different types of devices,

such as PCs, servers, workstations and printers, or a dedicated backup network that is used solely

for clients that ne ed to be backed up.

The conﬁ

guration, illustrated in Figure 7 on page 25, is the simplest and most common conﬁguration,

assuming that Gigabit networking is already in place, and requires no additional h ardware. The only

disadvantage to the conﬁguration is that a high volume of trafﬁc may impact network performance during

backup and backups may take longer to complete. However, if backups are scheduled to run outside of

normal business hours, the volume of data trafﬁcisunlikelytobeaproblem.
