Tape Autoloader
Features and requirements
The H P StorageWorks DAT 72x10 1U Tape Autoloader provides a compact, high-capacity, low-cost
solution for simple, unattended data backup. This unique design houses up to 10 tape cartridges in
a
compact 1U form factor with easy access to tape cartridges via two removable magazines. Each
magazine canholdupto ve cartridges.
The autoloader supports one HP StorageWorks DAT 72 tape drive. It occupies one SCSI target address
andusestwo LUNs forthe tape drive; onefor thetape drive(LUN 0)and onefor theautoloader(LUN 1).
The HP Stora geWorks DAT 72x10 1U Tape Autoloader is compatible with most operating systems and
environments that support the SCSI interface. However, the autoloader requires either direct support from
the
operating system or a compatible backup application to take full advantage of its m any features. To
verify compatibility, go to w
ww.hp.com/go/connect.
The HP StorageWorks DAT 72x10 1U Tape Autoloader utilizes the Ultra 160 SCSI LV D interface.
NOTE:
The SCSI single-ended interface is also supported but not recommended due to performance and
cable length restraints.
Maximum storage capacity and data transfer rate
Maximum storage capacity and ma ximum data transfer rates are as follows:
Table 2 DAT 72x10 1U Tape Autoloader specications
Characteristic
Specication
Maximum storage capacity,
10 x
DAT 72 data cartridges
Native: 360 GB (10 x 36 GB)
Compress ed: 720 GB (2:1 compression)
Maximum data transfer rate Native: 3.2 MB/s (11.5 GB/hr.)
Compressed: 6.4 MB/s (23 GB/hr.) (2:1 compression)
The above values assume you are using DAT 72 data car tridges. The drive is also read/write compatible
with HP DDS-4 and HP DDS-3 car tridges but these are not recommended for sustained use. Old tape
formats are more abrasive than later generations and using older tape formats can reduce the life
expectancy of the device.
SCSI requirements
The SCSI bus type d etermines the speed at which data can be transferred between devices on the bus
and
the maximum length of cable that can be used.
The following bus types are recommended:
An Ultra160 or Ultra320 SCSI bus. The drive m ay also be connected to a lower specication
LVDS bus, such as Ultra2 (80), but data will not be transferred as quickly.
